# Title Description
1 Topics Covered: • Introduction to optical communications (Historical perspective and basic concepts) • Optical fibers (Geometrical and wave descriptions; loss, dispersion and nonlinear optical limitations) • Optical transmitters (Semiconductor lasers and their characteristics, laser modulation, LED) • Optical receivers (Basic concepts; p-n, p-i-n, APD and MSM photodetectors, receiver design and analysis) • Lightwave systems (Architecture, design guidelines) • Multi-channel systems (WDM system and components, TDM, CDM) • A brief review on loss, dispersion and nonlinearity managements (if we have time)
